The City of Bondurant, Iowa is now up and going with an accurate, field-verified utility GIS system developed and implemented by Midland GIS Solutions.
Located on the east side of the Des Moines metropolitan area, Bondurant is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa according to US Census Bureau data. Over the last 20 years, the city has experienced a population growth in excess of 360%. The city’s development includes major industry expansion, including an Amazon Fulfillment Center currently under construction.
While providing sewer and water services to a population of approximately 6,600, Bondurant administration understood that its expanding infrastructure demands required an accurate and centralized utility data resource that could be accessed by all staff. Through referrals from other communities, Bondurant contracted with Midland GIS to map their utilities and migrate the city resources away from outdated paper maps.
In 2019, Midland GIS expert field crews performed survey-grade GPS data collection to locate all the sanitary sewer and water distribution networks. Professional inspection and inventory services were completed on all utility features. Utilizing the collected data, GIS technicians mapped and developed the connected network of all utility infrastructure features and inventory datasets ensuring a clean network that would be efficient to access and easy to maintain. Midland GIS integrated county, state and federal data layers into the GIS, including parcel ownership, cadastral data, protected streams, watershed boundaries, drainage districts, school districts, jurisdictional boundaries and National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) data through FEMA.
Upon completion of the data and map development, Midland GIS implemented Integrity™, a web-based GIS and asset management solution for city staff to use in a mobile and enterprise environment. The web-based GIS supports utility management efforts for budgeting rehab and replacement projects, as well as tracking work orders or analyzing reports. Midland GIS has implemented hundreds of successful programs similar to Bondurant’s across the Midwest.
