May 26, 2017 –
The City Council in Charles City, Iowa recently voted to move forward with additional utility mapping with Midland GIS Solutions. Originally hired in 2016, Midland GIS Solutions has provided RTK survey-grade GPS mapping of the water distribution system in Charles City and developed and implemented a web-based GIS program to edit and maintain the water network, track maintenance and operation activities, as well as support the code enforcement tracking efforts for the city.
The city of Charles City has previously maintained a CAD-based records system for the sanitary sewer infrastructure. This project will improve the basic schematic locations of the features with high accuracy GPS shots.
Midland GIS field crews will begin sewer mapping in June, utilizing RTK survey-grade GPS equipment to achieve sub-centimeter accuracy complete with elevation information on each sanitary sewer structure. Every manhole will be opened, a full top-side inspection performed, and attribute data and photographs collected. This will benefit the City Engineer and staff by having a complete accurate map and data set on the collection system. The final data will be integrated into the Charles City web-based GIS and Asset Management program hosted by Midland.
Charles City, Iowa has a population of 7,600 located in North Central Iowa near the Cedar River in Floyd County.
