Burlington, KS is On Board with KMEA’s G-MAP; Signs Contract for Electric Network Mapping
The City of Burlington, KS recently selected Midland GIS Solutions to GPS locate their city’s electric network as part of KMEA’s GIS Mutual Aid Program (G-MAP). The project, which began on January 16th, will consist of accurately identifying and GPS locating all electric utility network features, developing a GIS database and integrating digital aerial photography into a comprehensive GIS program. Once the project is complete, the City of Burlington will have an accurate and complete digital mapping program to efficiently manage their electric utilities. KMEA will maintain an offsite backup of the City’s GIS data.
The GIS will prove to be a tremendous asset in the event of a natural disaster or severe storm. In an emergency, KMEA has immediate access to a standard set of utility maps with accurate locations of transformers, lines, poles, etc., and can provide this data to neighboring KMEA mutual aid cities. Those nearby mutual aid cities and other first responders can utilize the GIS maps to effectively assess the situation and put a plan in action much sooner than ever before.
Burlington, KS has a population of around 2,700 and is located 60 miles south of Topeka. For more information on KMEA’s G-MAP visit their website.
